Bridging The Gap

In 1969, the first successful message was sent from UCLA to Stanford University using ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). Later that year two more locations were added, one at UC Santa Barbara and the other at the University of Utah. This was the beginning of what is now known as the internet.

In 1990, Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first web browser on a NeXT computer, called World Wide Web. Between 1990 and 1995 there were many other browsers being built, but in 1995 Microsoft released the Windows 95 operating system, which included a Web browser called Internet Explorer. According to an article written by Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols on March 26, 2015, on http://www.zdnet.com/ Google Chrome is the number 1 web browser used in the US. Internet Explorer came in second.

There are mSocialNetworkany methods for communication on the internet now. Social networking is probably the #1 way to communicate today. Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram are just a few ways people around the world communicate with each other on the internet. These sites were formed in order to connect people and share their interests.

Email became very popular in the mid 90’s. AOL was one of the first email providers in 1995. There are still people who use @AOL.com for their email AOLaddresses, my wife being one of them.

Blogs and Wikis are ways information and opinions are expressed. Blogs are written by anyone. They can be written about any topic and are usually the views of the person writing the blog. Wikis are a website that allow anyone to add information to the page. The information on Wiki pages are not always correct, so it is not advised to take the information as fact.

Podcast and webcasts are more ways to express information. A podcast is an audio or video file that can be downloaded from a website to a media device to listen or watch. A webcast is the broadcasting of news or entertainment over the web.

Streaming media refers to the way media is delivered. There are several different media players. If you have ever listened to music or watched a movie or video on YouTube then you have streamed media. Streaming media has become very popular, almost all the major networks have ways to stream TV shows and movies from their websites.shopping-cart

E-commerce is the buying and selling of goods or services over the internet through computers and laptops. M-commerce is also the buying and selling of goods and services, but over mobile devices like phones and tablets. M-commerce is becoming more popular with the development of smartphones and the access to the web from mobile devices.
